Anna Hazare held for breach of peace, says Chidambaram

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram said Team Anna refused to accpet the government's conditions and refused to give an undertaking.
"Maintaining law and order is not an easy task. Protests are welcome but they should be peaceful. I think this is unacceptable. The government uis not against democratic, peaceful protest.
"It is with regret that I report to you that this action is taken against protestors," said the home minister, adding, "Anna Hazare's decision to defy prohibitory orders led police to believe that he could commit a cognisable offence."
He said that Delhi commissioner of police will address the media shortly. "It was Delhi police which laid down the conditions, not
the government," said Chidambaram.
The home minister said that 1,200 to 1,300 people have been detained in Delhi and most of them have been taken to Chhatrasal stadium.
"If someone says, he would defy prohibitory orders, it is unacceptable in a democracy. Hazare will be produced before a magistrate. Team Anna is free to go to court to challenge the restrictions imposed by police. There is no way to take away Parliament's right to make law. Our intention is that Parliament should resume its business tomorrow," said Chidambaram.
Union telecom minister Kapil Sibal said the government is not afraid of the media. "Media is the only way to tell the people of India what's happening around the country."
